Brand identity
Rio Olympics
2016
—
Our creative team designed the brand identity for the 2016 NBC Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. I had the role of art director and design a wide range of promotional material including posters, key art, print campaigns, digital ads. a brand toolkit, environmental spaces.
We partnered with a wide range of divisions across NBCUniversal to produce the most successful Summer Olympics ever.
Identity
—
I created a design identity that focuses on showing the athlete’s personality along with their passion and determination in competing. Our approach displayed a range of diverse athletes' photo key-art, colors representing Brazil, and overlay wavy shapes graphics inspired by the NBC Rio Logo which represents sun, land, and sea.
The brand identity was implemented into a series of posters, digital ads, key art, print campaign, environmental spaces, collateral, UI theme, and set designs. Additionally, a brand guideline toolkit was designed to be used by our company and contract vendors to help promote the event.
Visuals + Type
—
Our goal was to capture the essence of Rio with designs that are unique to the NBC brand and function fluidly across platforms.
All NBC coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics used Sharp Sans Display No. 1.
Layout
In order to keep a design layout consistency it was important to provide a clear design toolkit and brand guide for external interpretation . We developed a flowy brand design aesthetic that could successfully adapt into multiple mediums and specs.
Athletes
—
I had the challenge to art direct a 7 days photoshoot with more than 120 athletes. My goal was to capture the energy, emotions and uniqueness of each athlete in the most natural way. We integrated the best images of athletes into the brand identity.
Outcome
—
From concepts to final deliverables, our team and I spent about 2 years working on this Olympics. I am so proud of the creative work we came up with and caring in delivering a great design brand identity.
This is the first project I fully art directed a photoshoot. I am grateful for the opportunity and trust gave by my team to push my design and creative skills further. It was inspiring getting to meet and work with a diverse group of talented athletes such as Simone Biles and Michael Phelps and translate their work into our brand identity.
Our brand design work had positive impact at NBCUniversal and helped being the most successful Summer Olympics yet.
